The Zlatni rt quarry
In
the last few years in Rovinj, as everywhere in the world,
free climbing is a sport that is increasingly spreading and
gaining popularity. Although the majority of people still
consider free climbing an extreme sport, the fact is that
it is being practiced by the old and the young, women and
men, and that with an experienced guide and teacher the risks
are reduced to minimum. Besides, it is an activity requiring
constant maintenance of physical fitness and shape bringing
one to a direct contact with treasures of nature and its
beauty.
Thanks
to geological configuration of rocks and old quarry the stones
of which have been used to construct a large number of Venetian
palaces, in Rovinj and vicinity there are several climbs,
that, every in its own way, attract an increasing number
of free climbing fans. Due to favourable climate conditions,
climbing is possible since early spring to late autumn. During
daytime in summer months the temperatures are high, but in
nearest proximity (except the climb near Dvigrad) there are
beaches that will give you well-deserved refreshment.
ZLATNI RT
The most popular climb is in the protected park-forest Zlatni
rt (Punta Corrente). The vertical rock is only about 20
meters away from the sea and looking westwards so that
in early evenings you will be able to enjoy in unique sunsets
and view of the Rovinj archipelago. The paths are mostly
easy ones so that they are suitable for beginners and family
excursions.
DVIGRAD
The climb near Dvigrad, a long-time abandoned mediaeval castle,
is a few kilometres away from Limska
draga. The location
where you can park your car is 10 to 15 minutes drive from
Rovinj, and the climb just a few minutes walk. As temperatures
are high in summer, we recommend bringing some beverages
along and beware of snakes that you may come across in
arrival and on the foot of the paths. The climb, from which
there is a spectacular view to the broad valley and the
castle of Dvigrad, looks southwards.

LIMSKA DRAGA (Lim Fjord)
The climb is near the road to Poreč, at the entrance in the
Limska draga. The rock looks southwards and therefore, in
summer, it is recommended to wait after 5 p.m. when the shadow
falls. Although the climb is directly at the road, there
are not many cars out of main season, as this is not a main
road. Do not park near the road underneath the climb, but
turn towards Limska draga and leave your car there.
